Giro d'Italia 07-06-2008

Starting in Florence on the 7th June 2008 in the Piazza Ognisanti, the Giro d'Italia attracted the attention of thousands of passionate Italians. With the help of both the Mayor, the Police, Palazzo Tornabuoni and the Starwood Group, The Supercar Club made this a very special event.

From event registration at Palazzo Tornabuoni to the welcome gala dinner in the Winter Garden at the Grand Hotel overlooking the River Arno, everything was perfect. After some fantastic Florentine hospitality, the teams crossed the start line on the morning of the 8th June at 8.30 am, and as per the day before, left Florence with the roads closed especially by the Police, who again were a huge support to the event. So much so that during our week in Italy the Police joined the locals by the side of the road waving as we toured the country. This was no doubt helped by the fact that the Giro d'Itaia was featured on the Italian national 8 o'clock news, when Greg Hollamby was interviewed and explained that the event was a celebration of the Supercar and Italy had been chosen as the venue because of the passion Italians have for these types of car, the beautiful scenery and the wonderful Italian hospitality.

The next two nights were spent near Rome in a classic grand five star hotel, allowing the teams to drive through the national park and the largely untouched roads in this region, before heading north again up through Tuscany and its classic beauty to spend the night in another five star hotel. Day four saw the cars make their way, again via empty and winding roads up to the Portofino Coast for the night, where many teams could not resist the lure of Portofino's nightlife.

Day 5 was a mix of tunnels and mountains taking the Supercars into the mountains above San Remo before finally crossing the finish line in Casino Square, where with the help of our friends at the Automobile Club de Monaco and Societe des Bain de Mer, the teams spent their final night at Hotel de Paris in Casino Square with many of the cars parked around the famous 'Camembert' in Casino Sqaure.
